Brief: You are required to re-design selected areas of Huguenot House, Stephens Green, into the
new headquarters of a Retail Company. accessible to all. (drawings attached).
This module focuses on the design of a company headquarters, using lectures, site-visits and building
regulations to examine the underlying principles of Universal Design with regard to the following:
- Principle 1: Equitable Use
- Principle 2 : Flexibility in Use
- Principle 3: Simple and Intuitive Use
- Principle 4: Perceptible Information
- Principle 5: Tolerance for Error
- Principle 6: Low Physical Effort
- Principle 7: Size and Space for Approach and Use
My building was designed based on the universal design principles to reflect its diversity and and serves a world fit for all people. This diversity aims to celebrate human differences, and to market usability rather than disability.
In this design, the first principle was applied in order to make it more appealing to all users. This can be seen in its modern and simple design with mostly glass components, natural lighting and green plants as decorative elements. Applying the second principle guarantees more flexibility in use. This can be seen in two features in my design, staircase and elevators. Staircase was designed to be placed in middle of the building so everything can be reached easily. Also, two elevators were added to facilitate movement to all users. Staircase and elevators also can serve the sixth principle, in which the design can be used efficiently and comfortably and with a minimum of fatigue. Offices and corridors were also designed based on the latter principle. Some offices include a large sized desk for meetings, discussions, and sharing ideas. corridors are interconnecting offices to facilitate mobility within workplace. In addition to that, U-shaped shelves were added for more ease when reaching books in the library. The seventh principle was taken into account, as appropriate space was created in offices and corridors for a wider range of movement. Office furniture are comfortable to use regardless of user's body size, posture, or mobility.
