The PolyMouse is the world’s first 3D printed custom computer mouse. The mouse is designed to fit the exact dimensions of a user’s hand to maximise comfort and minimise the likelihood of repetitive strain injuries, in their hand or wrist. Using information from an image the hand dimensions required to build the perfect mouse can be gathered and input into our master model to create the exact fit. The PolyMouse is ideal for the STEM industry, primarily in design and engineering sectors as these professionals use computer mice for long periods of time and are at risk of developing RSI.
Over the last thirty years, every other computer component has radically changed. Even the USB port that connects a mouse to your system has evolved substantially, and continues to do so to this day. But the mouse itself is largely the same. The ball has been replaced by an optical or laser sensor, but it performs an identical function - just more efficiently.
The PolyMouse is the next evolution of the computer mouse allowing any computer user to get the perfect mouse for their hand regardless of age or size. This is achieved with minimal user effort as the user only needs to supply an image for their hand to provide the key hand dimensions needed to build and 3D print them the perfect mouse. The universal design of the PolyMouse allows the product to be scaled to fit any hand, from the hand of a small schoolchild to the hand of a basketball player and everything in between.
Our research has shown a link between improper computer mouse usage and repetitive strain injuries in the hand and wrist. Due to this information there is a deep-rooted need for a product such as the PolyMouse in the computer peripherals industry. While there are a large number of ergonomic mice on the market none are high quality, custom and affordable to the average user. Our research has informed us that there is a need for a mouse that offers ergonomic comfort at an effective price which can be met by our product the PolyMouse.
Using 3D printing the manufacturing costs of this custom product can be slashed dramatically which allows the sale of the PolyMouse at a reasonable price of €50-60. This manufacturing process can also be upscaled to meet consumer demand by purchasing additional 3D printers. Due to our simplified design the Polymouse can be manufactured in two parts and assembled with one screw rather than conventional three or four-part computer mice. This creates a simpler product which can be manufactured and assembled very easily.
The mouse design is one that offers comfort, support to the hand and wrist at all times, allowing a greater ease of use, manoeuvrability under use and frictionless use on a wide variety of surfaces. In a society where the induction of computer interaction is being introduced at younger ages, and in market that is constantly growing, we are of a strong belief that our PolyMouse would offer an alternative to the standard one size fits all products currently available, while maintaining a competitive price point to the standard mice available on the market now.
1 Equitable Use
As the mouse is completely custom to the size, shape and form of the individuals hand, the user benefits from having a mouse that is formed specifically for them. Also, due to the symmetric design of the mouse, it is suitable for both left and right handed users, or those with a physical impairment with their hands.
2 Flexibility in Use
As stated above, the mouse can be used for both left and right handed individuals. This results in a mouse that is not limited to just one or the other, but rather to all.
3 Simple and Intuitive Use
The design of the mouse does not over complicate the current process of use, and allows a fluid transition and smooth learning curve for new users.
5 Tolerance for Error
The design of the product limits the room for error due to the number and simplicity of the components. By having only an upper and lower shell, as opposed to the typical 3 or 4 part assembly, the assembly requires just one screw fastener as opposed to several snap features that could break and pose hazardous to people of diverse abilities.
6 Low Physical Effort
One of the unique selling features of The PolyMouse is the ability to maintain a neutral hand position for the user throughout use. As is the case with current mice, the operating forces for all actions from clicking to moving on a tabletop, is negligible to the user. This force required is lessened by the fact the mouse is fitted exactly to the size of the users hands.
7 Size and Space for Approach and Use
As stated above, the custom factor of the PolyMouse allows the user to be accommodated for a variety of hand size and grip. As the mouse is custom to the user, and their individual circumstances, any assistive devices can be accommodated for in the manufacture via 3D printing.
